Professional Bolting Case & Joint Analysis
How high is the actual preload generated? What friction coefficients are present in the bolted joint? What torque is required for a secure assembly? And what is the load limit of the joint?
A professional bolting case analysis allows bolted joints to be inspected metrologically and optimal assembly parameters for industrial applications to be determined.
This service is offered via hyTool, but the technical execution is carried out by VMA engineering GmbH. VMA is a 100% sister company of hyTool GmbH and specializes in testing, measuring, and analysis tasks related to industrial bolted joints.
Bolted Joints Measure Instead of Estimate
For the inspection, the real bolting case with your components and fasteners is simulated on VMA's test benches. The screwing can be performed with a programmable EC spindle and metrologically recorded with appropriate sensor technology.
Torque
Recording of the torque curve during the screwing process and analysis of characteristic assembly and load points.
Angle of Rotation
Measurement and evaluation of the angle of rotation for a detailed assessment of the screwing process.
Preload & Clamping Force
Investigation of the actual preload or clamping forces generated in the joint.
Possible Tests and Analyses
The specific test plan is tailored to your components, fasteners, and the respective assembly task. Among others, the following investigations are possible:
- Determination of friction coefficients on screws and nuts according to DIN EN ISO 16047
- Investigation of friction torques in adhesive or clamping thread lockings
- Measurement of insertion and forming torques in direct fastenings
- Investigations of direct fastenings in plastic, light metal, and steel
- Determination of insertion and overtightening torques
- Determination of suitable assembly parameters for process planning
- Determination of fracture and overtightening torques of the joint or fasteners
- Measurement of loosening and breakaway torques
- Measurement of prevailing torques to assess residual preload
- Measurement of preload and clamping forces
- Investigation of setting phenomena and relaxation
- Long-term and temperature investigations
- Analysis of the influences of temperature, vibrations, and time on the clamping force
- Investigation of different speeds and their influence on the screwing process
Typical Questions
Which Torque?
Determination of suitable assembly parameters for a defined and reproducible bolted joint.
Which Preload?
Investigation of the relationship between torque, friction, and the actually achieved clamping force.
Where is the Limit?
Investigation of overtightening, fracture, and failure torques of the joint or individual fasteners.
Why Does the Joint Loosen?
Analysis of loosening behavior, setting phenomena, relaxation, and other influencing factors.
How Does Temperature Affect It?
Investigation of the influence of temperature and time on the existing clamping force.
Is the Assembly Process Safe?
Metrological investigation for the optimization and safeguarding of industrial screwing processes.
How a Bolting Case Analysis Works
Discuss Application
Components, fasteners, and the specific technical question are defined.
Create Test Plan
VMA determines the suitable measuring variables and the individual test procedure.
Measure & Analyze
The bolting case is simulated, and the relevant measurement data is collected and evaluated.
Document Results
The results are evaluated graphically and in tabular form and documented in an investigation report.
Investigations Directly at Your Application Also Possible
Depending on the task and application, the technical situation can also be examined on-site at your location. Based on this, VMA develops a suitable testing and analysis plan for the respective bolted joint.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bolting Case Analysis
Who conducts the analysis – hyTool or VMA?
The technical analysis is carried out by VMA engineering GmbH. The service is offered in the hyTool webshop. VMA is a 100% sister company of hyTool GmbH.
Can our own components be examined?
Yes. The goal of a bolting case analysis is precisely the examination of the real joint with the components and fasteners relevant to the application.
Which measuring variables can be examined?
Depending on the test task, torque, angle of rotation, and preload and clamping forces can be recorded and evaluated together, among others.
Do I receive documentation of the results?
Yes. The collected measurement data is evaluated, and the results are then documented in an investigation report.
Do you have a bolted joint that needs to be examined more closely?
Describe your application and the technical question to us. Together with the specialists from VMA engineering, we will clarify which tests and measurements are sensible for your bolting case.
