Tool selection for pipe assembly & maintenance

Pipeline construction tools for assembly, maintenance and repair

Professional work on industrial pipelines requires specialized tools for different work steps. Misaligned flanges must be carefully aligned before bolting, pipelines precisely cut during modifications or repairs, and individual pipe sections securely isolated for maintenance or testing. hyTool offers professional pipeline construction tools for plant construction, maintenance, and industrial service applications.

Which tools are needed in pipeline construction?

Task Suitable tool Typical application
Two pipe flanges are not exactly aligned Flange alignment tool Correction of lateral or other flange misalignments before bolting
Flange holes must be positioned Flange positioning pin Quick alignment of opposing bolt holes
Pipe must be cut from the outside External pipe cutter ECC Cold cutting of large-diameter pipelines and cylindrical components
External access is restricted Internal pipe cutter ICC Controlled cut from inside to outside
Locally isolate pipe section PITT isolation and test tool Maintenance, repair, welding work and local pipeline isolation
Locally pressure test weld seam or pipe connection PITT pressure testing system Local pressure and leak testing of a defined pipe area

Controlled flange alignment in pipeline construction

During assembly, maintenance, and modification work, two pipeline flanges can shift laterally or in position relative to each other. The bolts should not be used to forcibly pull together larger misalignments.

Special flange alignment tools apply the required corrective force specifically between the pipe and the flange. This allows the flange positions to be adjusted before inserting or tightening the connection bolts.

Flange alignment tool or flange positioning pin?

Flange alignment tool

An alignment tool generates a defined mechanical or hydraulic force and is used when the position of opposing flanges needs to be actively corrected.

The required tool size depends primarily on the necessary corrective force and the installation situation.

Flange positioning pin

A conical positioning pin is guided through opposing flange holes. Its conical shape helps to position the holes in a controlled manner relative to each other.

hyTool positioning pins are available for various hole diameters and also in longer versions.

Controlled and cold pipe cutting

During repairs, modifications, and decommissioning work, existing pipelines often need to be cut directly on site. Special industrial pipe cutters are available for large pipe diameters.

ECC – Cut pipe from the outside

The ECC is positioned on the outside of the pipeline and performs a concentric cut around the pipe circumference. The system is designed for pipelines and cylindrical components with large diameters.

ICC – Cut pipe from the inside

The ICC is inserted inside the pipe. Its cutting tools move radially outwards and cut the pipe wall from the inside. This makes the system particularly suitable for situations where external access is restricted.

Mechanically isolate pipes and perform local pressure tests

For maintenance, repair, and welding work, it may be necessary to securely isolate a limited area of a pipeline. The PITT series combines mechanical pipeline isolation and local pressure testing in one tool.

The tool is positioned inside the pipeline and mechanically seals the relevant area. The area between the seals can then be used for a local pressure test, for example, on a weld seam or pipe connection.

PITT Series: DN20 to DN600

Tool selection is not based solely on the nominal pipe size. Inside pipe diameter, wall thickness, or pipe schedule must also be considered. Depending on the design, test pressures up to 310 bar are possible.

Why is pipe schedule important for pipeline tools?

A nominal pipe size such as DN50 or an inch dimension does not automatically describe the actual inside diameter of the pipe. For the same outside diameter, different wall thicknesses can lead to different inside diameters.

Especially for tools that are positioned or sealed inside the pipe, the wall thickness or pipe schedule must therefore be taken into account in addition to DN or nominal size. Typical specifications include Schedule 40, Schedule 80, or Schedule 160.

Selecting the right pipeline construction tool

1
Work step Align, cut, isolate, or pressure test?
2
Pipe dimension Specify DN, inch size, outside diameter, and if applicable, inside diameter.
3
Wall thickness Consider millimeter specification or pipe schedule.
4
Installation situation Check access, environment, flange position, and available workspace.

Frequently asked questions about tools for pipeline construction

Which tools are needed for pipeline construction?

That depends on the work step. For flange assemblies, for example, flange alignment tools and positioning pins are used. For modification and decommissioning, pipe cutters may be required. For maintenance and testing, mechanical isolation and pressure testing tools are available.

How can two offset pipe flanges be aligned?

Special flange alignment tools can be used for this purpose. They generate a controlled corrective force that adjusts the position of the flanges before bolting. The required tool performance depends on the specific flange and the misalignment.

When do I need a hydraulic flange aligner?

For higher required alignment forces, a hydraulic tool may be useful. The PFA-09H, for example, generates an alignment capacity of 90 kN or 9 tons.

What is the difference between ECC and ICC pipe cutters?

The ECC works from the outside of the pipe and performs a concentric circumferential cut. The ICC, on the other hand, is positioned inside the pipe and cuts radially from the inside out. The ICC is therefore particularly interesting when external access is restricted.

Can a pipeline be cut without hot work?

Mechanical pipe cutting systems work as cold cutting processes. This means that the separation is carried out by machining or mechanically, and not by a thermal cutting process. Which solution is suitable and permissible for the specific system must be checked based on the respective operating conditions.

How can a pipeline be locally isolated for repair work?

Mechanical isolation tools can be positioned inside the pipe and seal a limited pipe section. The PITT series combines this mechanical isolation with the possibility of local pressure testing.

How can a weld seam on a pipeline be locally pressure tested?

With a suitable isolation and testing tool, a small area around the weld seam can be mechanically sealed. Subsequently, only this limited area is subjected to test pressure, instead of filling a much larger pipe section.

What does "Pipe Schedule" mean for pipelines?

The Pipe Schedule describes a series of pipe wall thicknesses. Different schedules can result in different wall thicknesses and thus different inside diameters for the same nominal pipe size. This information is particularly important for internal isolation and testing tools.

What information does hyTool need for tool selection?

Depending on the application, nominal pipe size, outside diameter, inside diameter, wall thickness or pipe schedule, flange dimensions, and installation situation are required. Photos or technical drawings also help with clear selection.
