Professional bolting tools for controlled bolted connections
In industrial bolted connections, the bolt size alone does not determine the suitable tool. Relevant factors include the required torque or desired preload, the wrench size, the accessibility of the connection, a suitable reaction point, and the available energy supply. hyTool offers solutions ranging from torque wrenches and torque multipliers to hydraulic torque wrenches and hydraulic bolt tensioners.
Which bolting tool is suitable for which application?
The following overview serves as a first guide for assembly, maintenance, mechanical engineering, plant construction, and industrial bolted connections.
| Requirement | Suitable tool type | Typical advantage |
|---|---|---|
| High torques with easily accessible bolt | Hydraulic square drive wrench | Flexible use of various impact sockets and controlled torque generation. |
| Large bolt with very limited installation space | Hydraulic cassette wrench | Particularly flat design and direct engagement on the nut or bolt head. |
| Defined axial pre-tensioning of large bolts | Bolt tensioner | Axial elongation of the bolt without rotating tightening of the stud. |
| High torque without hydraulic supply | Torque multiplier | Mechanical torque increase for mobile assembly and service applications. |
| Controlled manual tightening | Torque wrench | Simple and flexible solution for assembly, maintenance, and recurring work. |
| Removing seized or damaged nuts | Hydraulic nut splitter | Targeted splitting of the nut when normal loosening is no longer possible. |
Torque method or hydraulic tensioning?
Tightening via torque
In the classic torque method, the nut or bolt is rotated. The set torque is converted into a preload force via the thread. For high torques, hydraulic torque wrenches are primarily used.
Suitable for: mechanical engineering, plant construction, steel construction, maintenance, flange assembly, and numerous recurring industrial bolting applications.
Axial tensioning with tensioner
A hydraulic bolt tensioner axially elongates the bolt. While the hydraulic tensile force is applied, the nut is seated against the bearing surface. After pressure release, the preload is created in the bolted connection.
Suitable for: large flange connections, high-pressure applications, and bolting applications where a defined axial preload is paramount.
Square drive wrench or cassette wrench?
Hydraulic torque wrenches are generally selected to match the installation situation. A square drive wrench works with a separate impact socket and is therefore particularly flexible for changing wrench sizes. Cassette wrenches, on the other hand, engage directly with the nut using a suitable hexagon insert and are particularly suitable for low overall heights and hard-to-reach bolted connections.
Therefore, not only torque and wrench size should be known for the correct selection. The lateral clearance, overall height, position of the reaction point, and adjacent components must also be taken into account.
The bolting tool is only part of the system
Particularly with hydraulic bolting technology, the tool, hydraulic pump, high-pressure hoses, couplings, reaction arm, and tool holder must be technically compatible. For hydraulic torque wrenches and tensioning technology, hyTool therefore also offers suitable hydraulic pumps and high-pressure accessories.
For square drive wrenches, the suitable impact socket is also crucial. Drive size, wrench size, design, and load capacity must match the wrench and the application. For special installation situations, adapters, extensions, reaction arms, and customer-specific special solutions are also available.
Bolting technology for industrial applications
This is how we find the right tool for your bolting application
A few technical details are sufficient for a reliable tool selection. The more precisely the bolting application is described, the more targeted the tool, holder, reaction arm, and hydraulic system can be designed.
Frequently asked questions about industrial bolting tools
Which bolting tool do I need for very high torques?
For high industrial torques, hydraulic torque wrenches are often used. For easily accessible bolts, a square drive wrench with an impact socket is particularly flexible. For low overall heights, a cassette wrench may be more suitable. Torque, wrench size, installation space, and reaction capability are crucial.
What is the difference between a hydraulic wrench and a bolt tensioner?
A hydraulic wrench generates torque and rotates the nut or bolt. A bolt tensioner, on the other hand, axially elongates the bolt. The nut is seated while hydraulic load is applied, and the preload force is maintained in the bolted connection after pressure release.
When is a hydraulic cassette wrench useful?
Cassette wrenches are particularly suitable when there is little space above the bolt or laterally. Due to their flat design, they engage directly with the nut and do not require a classic attached impact socket.
When is a torque multiplier the right solution?
A torque multiplier is useful when high torques are required, but no hydraulic or electrical power supply is to be used. The mechanical gearbox multiplies the input torque, enabling mobile applications.
Which impact socket fits my torque wrench?
The drive square of the wrench, the wrench size of the bolt or nut, the available installation space, and the required load capacity are crucial. For special applications, thin-walled versions, special lengths, and customer-specific special sockets are also possible.
Which hydraulic pump do I need for a hydraulic bolting tool?
The pump must match the tool in terms of operating pressure, oil volume, connection type, and required working speed. Depending on the application, manual, electric, battery-powered, or pneumatically driven hydraulic pumps may be suitable.
Can hyTool help with special sizes or unusual installation situations?
Yes. For deviating wrench sizes, special reaction arms, restricted installation space, or special tool holders, an individual solution may be required. Please send us the bolt size, wrench size, torque, and if possible, photos or a drawing of the installation situation.
